I am an enthusiast about the truth and the myth surrounding the story of the S.S. Politician - who met her fate in February 1941 off Eriskay, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Her precious cargo included 250,000 bottles of whisky – in addition to other more mysterious items!
The story of the Polly became the inspiration for Compton MacKenzie’s 1947 brilliant comic novel “Whisky Galore!”. Alexander MacKendrick and Ealing Studios’ subsequent film (based on Compton’s book) brought this fascinating story to the attention of the world.
